We began with the Reyes family because that was where Blue Beetle had something most superhero properties did not. Our character work mapped relationships across generations, including who protected Jaime, challenged him, understood him and interpreted his transformation differently. Cultural research examined family dynamics, language, social context, humor, domestic detail and the ways identity could emerge naturally through behavior.

Wardrobe and visual research followed the characters individually. We examined age-appropriate silhouettes, cuts, prints, accessories, grooming and styling alongside cultural and regional references. Those findings fed character briefs, cultural-reference decks and treatments that gave the creative teams specific material to draw from without flattening the family into a single visual idea of Mexican-American identity. Audience sessions tested recognition and comprehension across people with different levels of familiarity with Jaime and DC.

We leveraged those sessions to identify cultural details that landed immediately, references that benefited from context and places where conventional superhero language obscured what was distinctive about this particular property. Storyboards and concept reviews then concentrated on family, the Scarab, Jaime’s reluctant relationship with power and the collision between extraordinary events and an unusually involved household.

The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike removed much of the cast-driven promotional machinery normally available to a studio release. That made the property itself more important as a source of engagement. The family relationships, cultural specificity, Scarab mythology and character material we had already mapped gave Warner Bros. multiple ways to introduce Jaime through the substance of his world when traditional talent-led promotion was severely constrained.

Details & Info

Warner Bros. was introducing Jaime Reyes to a broad theatrical audience at a volatile moment for DC and in an increasingly crowded superhero market. We were engaged to uncover what could make the property unmistakably its own, using Jaime’s family, Mexican-American identity and cultural world as the starting point for creative development and fan engagement.
