Synopsis
Created by former Skid Row resident Justice Butler, HOMELESS HOUSING draws from Butler's firsthand experiences of homelessness and supportive housing in Los Angeles, and from the lives she encountered within a system where institutional failures coexist with extraordinary acts of humor, generosity and care.
After living on the streets, followed by two years in a Skid Row shelter, Journey finally has a key to a place of her own. Roof 7, a supportive housing community in Los Angeles, is supposed to mark the end of her homelessness. Instead, it becomes the beginning of an entirely different chapter.
A former radio personality with a quick wit and an instinct to take care of everyone around her, Journey is also living with a rare terminal illness. She has no intention of spending whatever time she has left waiting for life to happen. She wants to write, create and produce television, and for the first time in years, she has enough stability to believe that dream might still be possible.
Then she meets the neighbors.
Roof 7 is its own unpredictable ecosystem, populated by people whose lives rarely fit the assumptions made about them.
Cash is a hustler and aspiring R&B singer whose ambition is constantly at war with his worst impulses.
Levi is blind, fiercely independent and perpetually caught in disputes with the people around him.
E.J. is a disabled veteran wrestling with addiction, trauma and a volatile temper.
Around them is a larger community of residents, friends, caseworkers and outsiders, each carrying a past that slowly reveals how easily a life can unravel and how difficult it can be to put one back together.
Life at Roof 7 can be hilarious. Spades games become neighborhood events. Hallway arguments turn absurd. Everybody knows everybody else's business. Music, gossip, flirtations and friendships fill the building. And when someone gets a job, regains visitation with a child, repairs a relationship or takes another step toward independence, the victory belongs to everyone.
But progress is fragile. Addiction resurfaces. Friendships fracture. Jealousy and sabotage can derail an opportunity. People with power over vulnerable residents do not always use it honorably.
A bad decision, a missed payment or a conflict inside the system can put someone dangerously close to the streets they fought to leave behind.
When a deadly Los Angeles heat wave exposes corruption and neglect within the government-run housing system, Journey refuses to stay quiet. After multiple residents die, she helps blow the story open, unexpectedly finding herself thrust into the spotlight. Soon, the woman who was once virtually invisible on Skid Row is sitting for national interviews and being asked to speak publicly about a system she knows from the inside.
The attention changes Journey's life, but it does not remove her from the world she is fighting for. She finds herself straddling two realities: the national spotlight, where her voice suddenly carries weight, and Roof 7, where she still lives among people struggling to survive. Her growing visibility brings opportunity and a chance to make a real difference, but it also brings jealousy, resentment and sabotage from people who do not necessarily want to see her rise.
Journey becomes the person her neighbors turn to, celebrating their breakthroughs, getting pulled into their chaos and learning that helping people is not the same as being able to save them. At the same time, her illness forces her to confront the question everyone at Roof 7 is facing in one form or another: what do you do with your life when you finally get another chance?
HOMELESS HOUSING is an ensemble dramedy about what happens after the shelter, when a permanent address cannot resolve everything that came before it. At Roof 7, residents are rebuilding careers, relationships, families and trust while confronting the addictions, mistakes, bureaucracy and damaged relationships capable of pulling hard-won progress apart.
Their circumstances bring them together, but what develops between them is something none of them could have planned. They argue, interfere, celebrate, disappoint and show up for one another, gradually becoming an unlikely family whose victories and failures are rarely experienced alone.
For Journey, Roof 7 becomes more than the place she landed after Skid Row. As her illness advances and the future becomes increasingly precious, the people around her give new meaning to the life she fought to rebuild and to the home she thought she had already found.
Because beneath the uncertainty, struggle and laughter, there is hope. And at the heart of Roof 7, there is love.
