We maintained two parallel research systems. The first tracked Wizarding World canon, institutions, terminology, character history and established rules. The second dealt with the real world underneath the fantasy: geography, architecture, political context, etiquette, material culture and everyday life appropriate to the film’s period and locations.
Costume required particularly precise scrutiny. Our research went beyond broad decade references to garment cut, silhouette, fabrication, prints, accessories, methods of dress, hair and styling appropriate to specific places and social contexts. We identified references that belonged to the wrong year, region or class and supplied historically credible alternatives that still served the character and visual intention. Those findings fed cultural dossiers, creative briefs, treatments, location references and executive presentations.
When pandemic conditions disrupted the production’s original plans, the research became even more useful because geographic specificity no longer depended entirely on physical access to every intended environment. Teams had a documented cultural and historical foundation from which to evaluate substitutions and adaptations.
As material moved through post-production, we reviewed costume, terminology, geography, cultural detail and franchise continuity together. That final pass caught the small contradictions that become particularly visible inside a world audiences have studied for decades and helped new locations feel specific to themselves while remaining recognizably part of the Harry Potter universe.
Details & Info
As the Wizarding World expanded into new countries, cultures and political institutions — but Harry Potter Fan Club membership and participation was stagnating — Warner Bros. needed the specificity of those worlds to hold up against decades of established franchise history. Our expertise was brought in across creative and research to strengthen that foundation, from historical and cultural context to period dress, character detail and continuity.
