We treated Gotham as evidence. Our research mapped institutions, political relationships, criminal networks, families, locations and historical connections against what Bruce knew at each point in the story. That exposed opportunities for the city itself to carry information and helped distinguish material that deepened the investigation from atmospheric detail that looked appropriate but told audiences nothing. The detective premise shaped our treatments, storyboards, reference material and creative briefs. We researched investigative procedure, surveillance, crime reporting, institutional behavior and the visual language of evidence.

Typography, photography, documents, objects and environmental details were assessed for what an audience could reasonably infer from them and whether that inference supported the intended mystery.Audience research became especially valuable because mystery and confusion can look similar on a conventional feedback report. Test sessions helped us determine whether viewers lacked information they genuinely needed or simply had not solved something yet. Where a connection failed because the evidence was insufficient, we recommended clearer hierarchy or context. Where audiences were actively forming theories from available clues, we protected the ambiguity.COVID extended the production and release cycle considerably.

Later reviews therefore carried the investigative framework through evolving material, with particular attention to clue continuity, chronology, contextual errors and information introduced or removed through editorial changes. That consistency helped preserve a Gotham audiences could actively read and investigate as concerned citizens of Gotham City.
