The rise ep

MISS PLUKE's debut solo album is built around the full range of a voice that refuses to stay in one place. A tenor possessing a natural depth and piercing falsetto, she moves from the unfiltered truth of a raw chest voice to stratospheric vocal runs, powerhouse belts and falsetto peaks that carry the gravity of Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston.

Working with LARISSA LOWTHORP, she leaves behind the safe, airy R&B pocket and sanitized layers of conventional production for a tonally raw backdrop that lets that tenor force live without the clutter. The music comes first, with lyrics surfacing after MISS PLUKE has had time to sit with the melodies and feel her way through the emotional landscape of each track.

The album gives MISS PLUKE a canvas where she can move through travel and style at will, finding a home in the soulful ease of Al Green and the uninhibited energy of Tina Turner grunge.

West African Griot traditions and the Jamaican rhythms of MISS PLUKE's ancestry are anchored by the heavy, stadium-ready pulse of an ’80s rock beat.

Her sonic texture is vast: 1940s club swing, wooden flutes and intricate Andalusian and Romani flourishes collide with searing, psychedelic guitar riffs that would do Jimi Hendrix proud.

Her hypnotic tracks are anchored by the funk-laden precision of GARY "DEE DEE" JAMES, the left-handed virtuoso and former lead guitarist for Bootsy Collins whose credits span Lenny Kravitz to Paula Abdul.

His riffs provide the hard-hitting, consistent character MISS PLUKE insisted on keeping as she moves through her new auditory territory, alongside sharp, syncopated vocal interplay and the stacked, percussive harmonies that defined the golden era of street-soul.

Stripped of the industry’s safe layers, the album is as much about global lineage and personal soul as it is about modern execution. It is technically exacting without sanding away the roughness, expansive without burying the voice at its center, and deliberately resistant to a single lane.

For the first time, all of those influences, registers and contradictions belong to one sound entirely MISS PLUKE's own.

A record of contradictions: sweet and unruly, intimate and loud, polished and deliberately rough around the edges. For the beautiful, messy parts of us that refuse to sit still.
