Synopsis
THE RISE is a dramatic series inspired by the extraordinary life of hip-hop icon Miss Pluke, whose remarkable career carried her from Hollywood to stages around the world and placed her inside some of the defining events, relationships and rivalries in modern music history.
Moving between present-day Atlanta and Zella Monroe's earlier life and career, the series follows a gifted performer raised in the heart of Hollywood by a train conductor father and fashion designer mother. Dancing before she could walk, Zella enters entertainment at nine and, by her late teens, is touring the world with one of the biggest bands in popular music.
Her talent soon carries her beyond dance and into acting, recording and creative collaboration. With an instinctive command of movement, music, image and style, Zella helps shape the artists and culture around her while developing a presence and voice increasingly her own.
Zalla's ambition also places her inside hip-hop during one of its most transformative and volatile periods. Zella knows many of the artists who will define the era before they become icons, moving between friendships and circles that will later fracture along the fault lines of the hip-hop wars.
From studios and tours to private relationships behind the headlines, she experiences firsthand the rivalries, shifting loyalties and events that will become the subject of competing accounts for decades.
As Zella's own star rises, success changes some of the relationships around her. Jealousy turns personal and professional, trust is exploited, and people who once embraced her talent begin working to contain it when her growing influence threatens their own place in the spotlight. Each betrayal makes Zella more discerning, while every attempt to shut her out drives her deeper into the work, sharpening the talent and instincts that carried her there.
In present-day Atlanta, Zella is recording music of her own as memories of the people and events that shaped her life begin to collide with the versions history remembers.
Through her eyes, THE RISE revisits a celebrated and fiercely contested chapter of music history as it was experienced by someone who lived inside it, while following the continuing evolution of an artist whose movement, style, sound and creative voice helped shape the culture itself.
